A very popular free film festival, Merri-bek City Council in partnership with Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) brings the magic of cinema to Glenroy! Specially curated by the MIFF team, the festival features films in Arabic, English, Italian, Nepali and Urdu. Film dates are from Thursday 25 May to Sunday 28 May 2023 and will all be screening at the Glenroy Public Hall, 5A Cromwell Street, Glenroy. To plan your journey and for parking details, see here.
The majority of the films have now reached capacity and are waitlisting only. However, there are two more gems to capture with Ernest and Celestine, and Wadjda.
Ernest & Celestine - Sat 27 May 2023 at 11am AEST - Inspired by Gabrielle Vincent's children's book of the same name, this animation features an ornate world realised in vibrant watercolour that channels Ernest and Celestine's colourful relationship. A mouse avoiding a dental career and a big bear craving an artistic outlet forge a life of crime together.
Wadjda - Sat 27 May 2023 at 3pm AEST - The first feature ever shot entirely inside Saudi Arabia, by the country's first female director, is a boundary-pushing gem. Wadjda desperately wants a bike so she can race against her best friend. This coming-of-age story gives you a rare insight into daily life in Riyadh. It's light-hearted, full of hope and propelled by a spunky and smart protagonist.
