Glenn Brady is an old punk rocker who brings the punk ethos to his paintings. Punk has the attitude of just go out and do it, and to choose subjects that are key ordinary life. Glenn paints everything from beautiful trees to decrepit cityscapes, from everyday life to politics.

The Henderson Gallery , where Glenn's work is being exhibited, has an ethos of finding voices in the community and helping them express themselves through painting. Robert Henderson has years of experience working in social welfare programmes in the community, in particular with prisoner art initiatives. Robert is also an established artist in his own right.

Having recently opened the gallery, they are determined to put on exhibitions of talented and dedicated artists who have been ignored by commercial galleries in South East Queensland. This state has a history of playing it somewhat safe with art, which is not a bad thing in itself, but any art fan wants something that will challenge them. The Henderson Gallery is a great option for that fix.

With Glenn's paintings you are taken into an extraordinary vision of the ordinary world. You visit beaches deep in shade, walk down suburban streets full of houses and colour, wander under jacaranda trees and explore exotic landscapes made up of the ordinary places that we may pass, often without really seeing.

His trees have a classic impressionist feel and are often the most accessible works. For me, it is the paintings of cities and suburbs that are the most fascinating. They have a great whimsical and fantastical nature, but are deeply rooted in reality. These are fantasy landscapes that remind me of places I have visited.

His portraits are more challenging, and many people like the emotions and feelings expressed through the characters he chooses to paint. Even in his landscapes, the people and animals that inhabit these places bring great emotional value to the scene.

One of Glenn's great skills is the use of colour. Often in a painting there will be a single colour highlight that stands out from everything else. It could be the leaves on a tree, hats, faces or simply the sky. This creates a tension between the dominant form and the intruding colour, leading to levels of complexity in even the simplest composition,

Glenn's punk mindset is to go out and make things happen. He is not trying to paint something that sells, only to paint what he likes. In his own words "I don't care what other bastards think." Part of this is how quickly he works, able to produce large volumes of work at unbelievable speeds. Yet the works themselves don't have a hasty or hurried feel. This is punk meets the virtuoso, getting the work out there quickly but with superb depth of expression and great skill.

Whether you plan to pop into The Henderson Gallery to see Glenn's work, or just want to have a look at any time, it is a gallery always worth visiting. Works change once a month and there are exhibitions planned 7 months in advance with a lot more coming to that space.

The best thing about the Henderson Gallery is that they have a cafe out the front called Birrang Coffee . This makes the short walk up Earnest Street from Bank well worth it, because you can enjoy the art and sit back with a cup of coffee, a slice of cake, one of the books or board games, and relax.

I was lucky enough to attend the opening night of Glenn's exhibition. This was a great event with many old punk rockers in attendance, as well as the talented Sabrina Lawrie providing the musical entertainment on guitar.
