Glenelg Beach on a Stormy Day

A trip to Glenelg finally happened, but with our kind of luck the day we chose to visit was the stormy, cloudy, windy day you normally associate with hot soups, blankets, and home movies. But we did manage to get a bit of sunny weather before Thanos did the finger thing and half the beach crowd vanished. Only the valiant remained insistent on making something out of it.

A very ordinary beach, yet charming and welcoming. The only excitement is afforded by the lone pier that stretches lazily out into the ocean. This is a great site to take pictures of the sea and sky and of course selfies. You get a good view of the shoreline and when the sun is angled just right you get a great photograph, like this masterpiece of mine.

A simple stroll along this sturdy piece of work quickly transformed into an adventure sport when the wind gathered force and the waves got all choppy and aggressive. There was that moment when you can't quite decide whether to keep going or turn back. It was a faint-heart vs. brave-heart scenario and the one who screamed the loudest won. Ultimately, a ragtag bunch followed the wimp to the shore and the bravest of all followed the leader towards the horizon. Well, I followed the leader and it was worth it, rather unnerving, but worth it. We didn't go all the way to the end as people who were hurriedly returning looked at us funny. The idea was to take some awesome storm pictures, but brains prevailed, and we turned around. It was such a relief to get back on terra firma but we all played it cool.

Somehow an overcast sky adds to the awesomeness of it all and does not take away from the timeless splendour of the ocean. You can enjoy the beauty of it all from the safety of your hotel room. It isn't so bad because you can still see and smell the ocean as you enjoy your hot drink or just stare into the distance.

When the weather does not play spoilsport, Glenelg is rather delightful. The Jetty Road is where all the action is once you're done with the beach. A long line of shops offering everything crazy you'll only buy when you're on vacation. Of course, bandanas, sunglasses, and beachwear are a good idea. And then there are the high-end boutiques and jewellers alongside usual brands of clothing like Cotton On you'd find in any shopping mall in Australia, and it's hard to take them seriously in Glenelg. There is a shop selling organic groceries which is certainly worth a visit, but the prices make you glad you're on vacation and don't have to bother with that.

A number of restaurants give you good options for a quick breakfast and light eats as well as good dining if you're really craving something substantial. Andersen's Dutch ice cream was quite a nice treat. Not sure if it's all that fresh air, but I was sporting a huge appetite the whole time I was there. Then there's GU film house where we caught Shazam. The cinema has comfortable seating and is clean with a nice long counter for popcorn and soft drinks, as well as light eats if you're peckish.

The tram or light rail train swept in rather silently and we almost clapped like old timers did when a train went through their village. This tram/train has to be the best thing about Glenelg. It takes you to the city in about a half hour through a placid suburban countryside landscape. You see houses and folks going about their business and it sinks in that you're actually on holiday. It takes you to the heart of the CBD and then, of course, it's just another day in any urban cityscape.
