With local communities coming together to form solid foundations to better utilise natural resources and reduce waste, Glandore Community Centre's Garden and Environmental Gala will be held on Saturday, 24 August 2019, from 10am until 2pm, and will offer a series of workshops with a focus on sustainability. Cost of these affordable workshops range from free, $5pp and $10pp and it is best that you book early to guarantee your place (via phone: (08) 7420 6400 or Eventbrite: marioncommunityhubs.eventbrite.com.au).

The program of workshops for Glandore Community Centre's Garden & Environmental Gala is as follows:

- 10am-10.45am: Backyard Chooks (cost: $5pp) Details: Kate Hubmayer will provide you with information and discussion on how to care for chooks in a suburban backyard - taking into account housing, food, water and pest control.

- 10am-11am: Wood Fired Pizza Ovens (cost: free) Details: Using Glandore Community Garden's legendary wood fire pizza oven, Rob will show you how to create the perfect wood fire, using the best type of wood, techniques and tools. The finished products (pizzas) will be served for sampling at 12pm!

- 10am-12pm: Bag It for the Environment (cost: $5pp) Details: Glandore Sewing Group help create your own reusable produce bag and for additional cost, will be selling Boomerang bags and fruit tree bags.

- 11am-12pm: Garden Woes (cost: $10pp) Details: Gardening Australia presenter Sophie Thomson will provide organic and sustainable options for controlling pests and diseases.

- 12.15pm-1pm: Bringing Back the Butterflies – Native Plant Propagation (cost: free)%% Details: Learn how to attract butterflies and the benefits they deliver to the health and production of your garden. This workshop also includes demonstrations on techniques for grafting and seed propagation of butterfly-attracting native plants. Children are welcome to take part, by making their own origami butterfly to take home.

- 1pm-3pm: Garden Mosaic (cost: free) Details: Mary Pulford will show you how to make use of broken/unwanted crockery and tiles, in an actual communal garden mosaic art project, where you're invited to get hands-on experience. Learn how to prepare a suitable surface, create a design, prepare tiles, select suitable tools and help Mary with creating the next mosaic masterpiece!

- 1pm-3.30pm: Wrapping up the War on Waste (cost: $10pp) Details: Explore the journey of household recyclables from point of kerbside collection and the challenges faced and options available to reduce, reuse and recycle. You will then get to make your own reusable beeswax wrap, following tried and practiced techniques.

- 2pm-4pm: Successful Composting and Worm Farming (cost: $10pp) Details: Alan will show you how to make organic compost and start up and maintain a compost worm farm. Worm farm kits will be available for purchase on the day for an additional cost.
