Glamping Above Rapid Bay (near Second Valley)

Home > Adelaide > Accommodation | Escape the City | Fun Things To Do | Weekend Escapes
Published June 18th 2022

Driving up the olive tree-lined driveway in our city car, my friend and I take in the stunning countryside. Its green rolling hills, ocean views and cattle with the occasional kangaroo mixed in, is beyond beautiful.

It's the beginning of winter and we have decided to get away for a night at an Airbnb in a rural area, Deep Creek, South Australia, one and a half hours out of Adelaide.

Pulling into the accommodation site, we are greeted by our host Jeff, who proceeds with great pride to show us around the little tiny house that will be our home for the night. Jeff tells us he constructed the cabin himself from timber sourced and treated on the property and we are both impressed at the quality of it complete with gorgeous little quirks that make you smile.

The weather has turned it on for us with a clear blue sky and sun. While the wind is strong up in these hills, it is still pleasant enough to sit outside on the deck with wine and a platter.

Jeff's wife Kathryn has her own little stamp on the interior of the cabin, with her artwork on the walls showing love and talent for different styles and mediums, which somehow all work together to create charm and cosiness.

The best part about this accommodation is its positioning on the block. Situated on twenty acres of rolling hills complete with a deck, fire pit area and a viewing bench to really soak in the million-dollar ocean views.

This getaway is absolutely perfect for those wanting to avoid technology. It's private, peaceful and free of internet and television.

Things to consider;

1. My friend and I had packed a million blankets and pillows to prepare for the cold but really didn't need to. The amount of bedding provided was more than enough and the mattress was more comfortable than most hotel mattresses I've slept on. The solid construction of the cabin means that even though the wind was wild outside it was warm, quiet and draft-free inside. Plenty of towels are also provided.

2. There is no television or wifi. If you would like to bring your own devices you do still get reception on the property but perhaps plan ahead and download anything beforehand that would otherwise require internet access.

3. Basic cooking utensils are provided including a microwave, kettle, cutlery and crockery, electric skillet cooker (no cooktop or sink) tea towels and detergent.

4. Coming up the property driveway the centre grass is quite high. If you are in a small or low-profile car, take care to drive with one wheel in the centre and the other in the driveway groove to avoid getting stuck.

The toilet/shower is separate from the cabin but is very close and private from the main house.

The bathroom is situated just behind the cabin accomodation with a paved path leading to it and sensor light.

This little Airbnb was such a beautiful, private and relaxing place to stay. While our hosts kept to themselves, they made sure we knew they were available should we need anything. Definitely, a wonderful couples retreat or even for the aspiring writer wanting somewhere quiet and inspirational to write!

Now this is my kind of camping. Love the boho and vintage touches.
