Haunt the Gladstone Gaol
A scenic drive in the country didn't seem such a great idea when mother nature had a melt down and shed some heavy tears. Gratefully she pulled herself together as we hit the main street of Crystal Brook. Unfortunately we were a little late to sample the delights of the Kupsch Bakery which is open until 12pm on a Saturday.
This worked in our favour, as we ventured onto Laura (only 24kms away) and had a fantastic homemade hamburger and giant coffee in the quaint Koffi n Kandi Cafe. The staff were super friendly and it is obviously popular with visitors and locals alike.
Spooky ghost sounds from "smart alec' kids echo in my head as memories of visiting the gaol as a young school child flood back. A realisation that this was not too many years after the Gaol was decommissioned in 1975, dawns. Typically of gaols, there is an eerie sense of history and superstition.
At only $8 each to wander through all the buildings, read the excerpts from the records and the newspapers, it was an enjoyable afternoon. I'm not sure if I would be brave enough to spend a night, but the opportunity to take a few snaps with the chance of capturing the image of a ghost was alluring.
Wonderful sights and adventures await in the Southern Flinders Ranges which is so stunning at this time of the year.
