GJ Walter Park in Cleveland was one of the first official parks in Queensland, first gazetted in 1889. Sitting right on the edge of Moreton Bay on Redlands Coast , GJ Walter Park offers one of the best outdoor destinations for families across South East Queensland.

GJ Walter Park is well-spaced, with a children's playground set along a small, sandy beach. This includes a boat-themed imaginary play area, swings, and a large climbing web. There are a number of picnic tables, electric BBQs, and benches set beneath the shade of large, well-established trees.

The beach offers shallow paddling at high tide, and provides interesting shells and hermit crabs for children to watch at low tide. We always take towels for our kids when visiting GJ Walter Park! Thankfully there are also freshwater taps for washing feet under before getting back in the car to go home.

Adjacent to this area is a new canoe and kayak launching area. Visitors who wish to launch their small, non-motorised watercraft from this beach can check the tide times here .

Further along, the beach is the start of the dog off-leash park. This area is very popular amongst dog owners who come from right across Brisbane to give their furry family members the chance for a swim. Although there is a fence running along the boundary of the dog park, dogs are able to run and swim out past it once on the beach, so this park is best for dogs who have a solid recall.

The dog off-leash park is one of the largest in the region. Seating is provided along with picnic tables and fresh drinking water. There are also little treasures waiting to be found in their hiding places about the park.

There are many shade trees across the dog off-leash park, some of which are home to wild koalas. Spotting them is one of the true pleasures of spending recreation time in the Redlands.

For this reason, owners are asked to check to ensure there are no koalas crossing the ground before allowing their dogs off the leash. If you do come across any sick or injured wildlife in the park you can call the Redlands Wildlife Ambulance on (07) 3833 4031.

As you exit the dog off-leash park again, there is a huge playing field with a cricket green to cross on the way back to the playground. Behind the playground, as you enter the carpark, are Norfolk Pine trees believed to have been planted in the 1930s. Dogs are welcome across all of the areas outside of the dog off-leash park, providing they are kept on the leash.
