Free doughnuts, dimmies, cup cakes and nuts
Some things never change, American Doughnut Kitchen Facebook.
In previous Market Weeks they have given out things like oranges.
But this year they have finally got the formula right. Each market will be giving away an iconic food that people identify with that particular market.
It might not be quite as healthy as an orange but it is the food that people queue up for week after week as a reward for finishing their shopping.
These foods are as much part of the market experience as spruikers roaring out their bargains and customers walking congo-style down the aisles during busy periods.
The Great Dim Sim Giveaway
South Melbourne dim sims. I've seen huge queues for these bulbous delights. I even once saw some for sale in a butchers in the Eastern Suburbs and they were labelled South Melbourne's Famous Dims Sims. Great to see a food that can cross the Great Divide (the Yarra River) and still be famous.
They are much larger than your average dim sim, more akin to the size of a tennis ball than a golf ball and a bit more peppery than your standard dimmies. Some say today's aren't as good as those sold by Ken (Kuen) Cheng who passed away in 2006 and that he took his secret recipe with him. But they are still pretty damn good.
Free dim sims, limit 1 per person, September 13th, 10am-11am, while stocks last.

The Great American Doughnut Giveaway
American Doughnut Kitchen Facebook
The doughnut van at the Victoria Market market is so famous it almost needs no introduction. It has been providing cold hungry shoppers with their hot jam-filled balls of comfort for over 50 years. There are always queues, so when they are giving them away for free I suggest you take a book --- preferably War and Peace. But they are worth the wait.
Cup cakes are a more recent trend but just as popular. A lovely sweet cup cake and a coffee are becoming the perfect way to end a gourmet shopping expedition. A weekly treat.
11am and 1pm in the Fruit and Veg Hall. While stocks last.
September 15 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
