Girls in Boys' Cars - Book Review

Felicity Castagna has penned an ode to the movie
Thelma & Louise with an Australian twist. Actually, no, a multi-cultural twist. In this YA story, Rosa and Asheeka are two friends who have had enough of boys. Rosa, in particular, has had enough of being invisible. So, they steal Asheeka's boyfriend's car and go on an adventure.
The PR I received from Pan MacMillan said this novel is about -
"a complicated friendship, a road trip in a stolen car, and the stories that define us." It is this and more. As I read I found myself wanting the girls to succeed and not be caught by the police. I understood the teenage angst that got them where they were, the frustration girls of that age feel towards boys and I was cheering them on. These two girls champion women and what it means to be one.
When Rosa, a good girl who was doing well at school, catches the eye of popular Asheeka, they become friends. Asheeka 'helps' Rosa to become a better version of herself by giving her a makeover. Rosa, sick of being a loner and invisible, allows Asheeka to make these changes because she is happy to just have a friend.
If there was a star rating on WN, I would give
Girls in Boys' Cars 4 stars. The story is set against the backdrop of a McDonalds in Parramatta and then expands towards the rest of the NSW coast. The girls take off down south ending up in Wollongong, then Canberra and then they need to escape the horrific bushfires. This is when they head up north to Parkes.
I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to young adults and anyone feeling frustrated about who they are and what their future holds. This is not just a story for girls, boys will enjoy the ride as well. Go along to your local bookstore and support them along with Australian authors by buying books like this one.
Thank you to
Felicity Castagna and
Pan Macmillan Australia for providing me with a copy of the book and the photos in this article. Publication is in August 2021.
