Simple, Honest, Goodness is the motto of Girdlers cafe and it delivers with healthy breakfast and lunch items as I found out one beautiful day. Local suppliers and wholesome ingredients are used in creating both a nutritious and tasty menu in a thriving hub with spectacular ocean views.

Owned by none other than footy legend Ryan Girdler, his wife Katja and business partner Sebastian, this cafe is meat-friendly, vegetarian-friendly, vegan-friendly and gluten-free friendly – something for everyone.

The menu is broken down into Earlier, Always and Later sections with goodness abounding everywhere. Start your day with the Coco Chia Jar of coconut and vanilla chia pudding adorned with fresh fruit, superfoods, mango puree and a side of Hinterland honey and coconut ice cream or perhaps something warm with From Porridge with Love where rolled oats have been gently cooked in organic coconut and almond milk with poached cinnamon pear, raw choc bites, fresh berries and Hinterland honey. There's also Holy Avo, Cauliflower Rice Shakshuka (a take on an Israeli favourite), Pancake Revolution and more.

My husband went with the Bacon & Egg Roll Gone Healthy on this Earlier menu list. It contained smoked organic ham, fried eggs, baby spinach with roasted tomato and Bellpepper sauce on an organic charcoal bun. Black buns are somewhat of a trend at the moment and I've seen them in pictures before but this was the first time one of us has ordered one. For me, I equate the black look as being burnt but that it certainly wasn't. Hubby beamed that the bun and its contents were a great choice with the eggs being a little runny as he likes them and the bun tasting the same as if it was au naturel. I had to try a tiny piece of the bun for myself and sure enough, there was no charcoal flavour.

From the Later section of the menu, I chose the Mexican Tacos with grilled free range chicken, pineapple pieces, heirloom tomatoes and Spanish onion topped with coriander, lime and chilli dressing on soft corn tortillas. The flavours were amazing. It was so fresh and that dressing was wonderfully tasty and like nothing I've tasted before. It was a winner of a meal.

The Later menu also has a Health Conscious Stir Fry and a Glorious Chicken Salad, amongst other healthy items. After our savoury items, we went to the Always menu for something sweet for dessert. We shared the Love Me Berry crepes with seasonal berries, blueberry-infused maple syrup and coconut ice cream with Maqui berry dusting. They were delicious and a great end to our lunch.

This Always menu also includes a Naughty Nutella available with a vegan Goodtella and savoury crepes with Prosciutto and Buffalo Mozzarella, a salmon and avocado, and a Sweet Meadow with goat's fetta, apple slices, walnuts and honey, to name just a few.

Health bowls with various combinations of fruits can be had too as can raw treats and home baked goods from the counter. On my way out, I spotted an interesting fig and pecan slice with seeds atop that made me think it would fit right in with the world of May Gibbs's gumnut babies, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. It was too irresistible to walk away without it. A piece of healthy wonderful for later and that it was.

Children are not left out with a kids menu that has mini pancakes, eggs and toast with fruit, and a Happy Box with grilled chicken tenders, honeyed carrot sticks, seasonal fruit and sweet & salty popcorn.

The drinks are interesting here too with lots of juice combinations to choose from as well as milkshakes, smoothies and super smoothies, Kombucha and iced tea. Hubby downed a classic mango smoothie whilst I had the mango and almond super smoothie with almond meal, coconut milk, dates, honey and vanilla coconut yoghurt. Delicious with a capital D was the verdict on both.

But that's not all. Ryan loves his coffee and his passion for it led him on a journey that has seen him source (ethically) the most delicious mix of handpicked coffee cherries. A 100% organic four bean blend good for the planet and the soul. It certainly warmed us up as the afternoon began to cool. Cappuccinos, flat whites, lattes, and hot chocolate and ice chocolate with an 85% Venezuelan cacao, are sure to satisfy.

A mention also has to go out to the fantastic relaxed vibe that has been created with the bohemian chic decor on the inside whilst on the outside, where we sat on the balcony, the fresh air and views of the beach and pines across the road makes you feel like you're on holiday.

This cafe is clearly a favourite for locals as it was busy when we arrived and, a Monday too, which normally is a quieter day after a busy weekend. For us (we don't live close to a beach), it was a great outing with wonderful food and the bonus of a stroll along the beach and the foreground park. A children's playground and a colourful piece of art in the ping pong table add to the scene.
Girdlers is open 7 days (times below) with its Earlier and Always menus available all day and the Later menu available from 11.30am onwards. You can be assured of no trace of preservatives, additives or refined sugars. Check out the full menu and pricing on the website and get down to this all-natural haven for the above delights and more. Who knows you might even see Ryan himself. He had been there all morning the day we went but unfortunately had left by the time we arrived. Oh well, maybe next time.
