The new rooftop Gio Restaurant and bar is part of the revamped Harbord Diggers located on the Northern Beaches. Finally opening just a week ago in time for Anzac Day, the new look has been well received, especially the rooftop restaurant and bar. If you had seen the old Harbord Diggers (Mounties) you would not recognise the interior now.

Once inside you can make your way through the Dig Inn Cafe and Bar , which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menus were created by well-known cafe operator, Spiro Mylonas, and Head Chef, David Andronico.

The Digg Inn bar area continues along the hallway to the Diggers Local Providores.

Having their own providore is an interesting concept for a club. Here you can buy from a range of specially selected local and family made products. There are lots of delicious sauces, jams, pickles, olive oils and relishes. The Calabrian Range is produced by Gio Head Chef, Antonio Ruggerino, and the Diggers Local sauces have been produced by Dig Inn Head Chef, David Andronico.

If you can get past the providores, then make your way up the stairs to the new rooftop Gio Restaurant and Bar.

The stunning brand new restaurant offers different spaces to sit and enjoy the commanding ocean views.

There are plenty of areas to sit indoors or outdoors, making it ideal for large group celebrations. The added bonus is the rooftop bar area which offers spectacular uninterrupted ocean views of Freshwater Beach and out to Manly.

The new chef, Antonio Ruggerino, was awarded three hats by the prestigious Gault and Millau restaurant guide. Antonio has created a mouthwatering menu incorporating his extensive food knowledge and fusing flavours developed from his Southern Italian roots.

The menu is varied, consisting of light to larger meals. I arrived late after a local photographic exhibition at the Creative Centre in Curl Curl and only wanted a few tasters. We decided on a couple of starters and to share a main.

Out came perfectly cooked arancini balls, tender zucchini flowers filled with ricotta and al dente fettucini with prawns, garlic and chilli. I was impressed with the standard of food and flavours. My past experience eating in clubs had generally been a disappointment so it was a pleasant surprise to taste such a high quality.

I could see that once word got around about the new Harbord Diggers, especially Gio, that it would become one of the Northern Beaches' favourite new restaurants and bar. I couldn't wait to return and see the view during the day.

Gio opening hours;
Lunch: Wednesday - Sunday
Dinner: Tuesday - Sunday

There is even an outdoor Diggers Diner: a cute 1950's style van located outside on Evans Street that serves a simple take away menu , breakfast and lunch. It's perfect for grabbing a bite and heading back across the road to the beach.

The new Harbord Diggers is located in a unique location and now, with its totally new look and concept, you will find it hard not to enjoy it.
