Regulars of Brisbane's coffee and cafe scene will remember this quaint suburban café under its former guise as Dandelion and Driftwood. Enter June 2018 and Ginger Lily opened its doors in Gerler Road Hendra under its new identity, serving breakfast and lunch. I was keen to see how it had changed and hoped that it retained some of the quintessential charm that Dandelion and Driftwood was known for.

The chic black and white striped awning at the entrance announced I had arrived. The café has 3 seating areas: a pair of tables at the entry which greet visitors with black outdoor wrought iron, French provincial inspired chairs.

A sweet courtyard is at the back with the same wrought iron chairs (this time painted cream), shaded by umbrellas with a long bench table and is bordered by a white picket fence. The courtyard can be accessed from a laneway off street level.

Against the monochromatic backdrop, hanging baskets of flowering red geraniums bring an added floral beauty to the space. Inside, whilst small, has more romantic, French-inspired design and black and white paisley printed upholstery.

We decided to sit on the black chairs at the entrance facing the street to escape from the cool morning breeze in the courtyard. Now, it was time to check out the menu.

**What's on the menu?
** Step One. Select and order a coffee. Brisbane based Fonzie Abbott coffee roasters is the coffee of choice at Ginger Lily. My friend ordered a ristretto and pleasingly it came as a standard double shot. My English breakfast tea arrived in a maroon, antique styled flower shaped cup with a palm-sized laminated card which gave information about the blend.

The breakfast selection included many café favourites including:

- Corn and zucchini fritters $19.00
- Breakfast brioche $16.00
- Savoury mince on toast $18.99
- Buttermilk waffles $17.50 - $18.50

Smaller snacks like fruit toast and an assortment of sweet treats also finish off the meal. While my visit was on a weekend, I could imagine that Ginger Lily would shine for a morning or high tea, a special occasion or catching up with friends.

**Just what is a ginger lily?
**Apart from the coffee and the food, the name of the café got me wondering - what exactly is a ginger lily? Well, after a bit of research from gardening experts I discovered that the ginger lilies botanical name is Hedychium gardnerianum.

It produces fragrant flowers in late summer and early autumn which pervade the whole garden. The ginger lily a perennial which grows to at least two metres high and spreads quite widely.

My time at Ginger Lily was pleasant. I sense that it will continue to emerge from the long shadow of Dandelion and Driftwood and hope that as time goes on, its new and unique self will come to the fore. Ginger Lily is open seven days from 8am.
