Gimme Danger is a new doco-film covering the life and career of The Stooges. This is about as close as you can get to the band's story, thanks in part to writer director Jim Jarmusch's friendship with Iggy Pop (Jim Osterberg).
Far from being a sterile replay of interviews, the film has been thoughtfully put together with a mix of footage from popular TV shows and news reel from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as delightful and hilarious animation.
This builds context for the environment The Stooges emerged from, and in particular how ground-breaking their approach was for the time and place. As Iggy himself puts it "I think we helped wipe out the 60s".
The step-back-in-time approach also suggests the early influences which led to Iggy Pop becoming such a primal and inimitable stage performer.
The film also touches on Iggy's childhood growing up in a trailer, but rather than your rags to riches (or fame) story, you get the sense Iggy was completely content with life. In his typically matter-of-fact approach he says despite what the 'cool' kids thought,he had something much richer - a close relationship with his loving parents.
Also featured are interviews with Scott Asheton, Ron Asheton, James Williamson, Steve Mackay, Mike Watt, Kathy Asheton and former manager Danny Fields.
While this film will be a real treat for fans of The Stooges, it has plenty more to offer. You'll leave the film with a spring in your step.
Gimme Danger is showing from Monday 26 December at Luna Leederville and Luna Outdoor. For more information check their
