Gilbert’s Wine Bar & Grill

Recently opened, Gilbert's Wine Bar & Grill along Henley Beach Road is where you can enjoy American tavern-style food with Australian flavours. Lunch specials are offered on weekdays along with their main menu.

When ordering their Fried Chicken, diners can have it plain or tossed in a hot honey sauce. The pieces of chicken were juicy and the crisp coating set off the flesh nicely. It had a delectable savoury flavour and dill pickles provided a tangy element. Aioli dipping sauce came with the dish to enhance the taste.

The smashed beef patty in the G.B Style Burger was not dry and had a good amount of charred flavour. Befitting the style of a smashed patty, the exterior had a nice crust. Caramelised onions and pickles partnered nicely with the beef, and chilli provided a spicy kick that was not too intense. The restaurant’s good sauce tied everything together. We were able to have the cheese served on the side.

For those who want a side dish that is a bit different, there is the Avocado and Cucumber Salad. The cucumber retained its firmness, and the avocado provided a contrast of texture. The ginger flavour of the ginger dressing was not overwhelming, and Thai basil provided an Asian flair.

The piece of fried chicken in their Chicken Burger was as good as the one offered as a snack dish, and of a generous size. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, and sufficient Kewpie mayonnaise ensured the burger was not too dry. Like the G.B Style Burger, we had the cheese served on the side.

While we would have liked the portion size of the Mojo Pork Chop to be a bit bigger, it was cooked just right, and the meat that can be sliced off the bone was not tough. The salsa macha topping the pork had a smoky flavour with a bit of texture. The pork chop was served on a bed of orange and mustard slaw, which had a delightfully sharp flavour.

Though the portion size of their Triple Cooked Chips seems small, the chunky style made them filling. The interior was fluffy with some texture, and the exterior was crisp. Eating the chips slowly is advised as the interior is steaming hot. While not mentioned in the dish’s description, the chips were served with an aioli dipping sauce sprinkled with spices.

As its name suggests, the Limoncello Tiramisu replaced the usual coffee liquor with its namesake Italian lemon liquor. The Limoncello was what gave the dish its refreshing and lemony flavour. The cream balanced out the lemon flavour, and the layers of the sponge were light and fluffy. The size of the dish was big enough for it to be shared.

To accompany your meal, the restaurant offers a wide selection of drinks, with wines making up a key part of the selection. The decor of the restaurant gave it a retro feel.
