Patience, or Bunthorne's Bride, by Gilbert and Sullivan is a delightful production designed to amuse and enthral all at once. This opera tells the story of Patience, a lovely but naïve milkmaid who was never experienced the joys of falling in love. In the space of a heartbeat, she finds herself torn between two suitors, Bunthorne, whom all the other ladies lust over, and Grosvenor, a happy-go-lucky pretty boy. Over two acts, the audience watches Patience's struggle to understand what love is, and how she comes to choose between the two. After all, Patience is not always a virtue.

This opera is quite satirical and offers a comical look at the fickle side of human nature, whilst providing a witty dialogue and many lively songs. Despite being set in the 1870's, the dialogue has been adapted for an Australian audience, with many humorous references to Australia. Even though it was written in the 19th century, the concepts of superficiality, romanticised love, and vanity, are as relevant now as they were then. Overall, I would give this performance a 9 out of 10, as it has something to appeal to everyone: humour, satire, song and dance, all set against a beautiful backdrop.

The opera is currently running until 8th October 2016, at the Smith Auditorium Lyric Theatre in North Sydney. Tickets start at $40 for adults, $35 for concessions, or $105 for families. If you've never been to an opera before, then I highly recommend Patience; it's sure to delight!
