While most children enjoy sitting and reading a picture story book with mum about Mother's Day, some older members of the family may feel a little bit left out. That's where these gift books come in handy. While they may not follow a cute narrative like the children's books, they are equally as entertaining and/or interesting to look at. Some of these gift books have been released for Mother's Day and some are readily available at all times of the year, but all share the same sentiments and are guaranteed to show mum just how much you care about her.

Keepsake journals are always popular with the arrival of a new child, or even when chronicling a pregnancy. But older generations equally enjoy the chance to tell their story through the use of photos and 'diary entries', making journals like these the perfect gift. Mothers and grandmothers have the chance to reflect on their lives, loves and experiences, and compare life today to how it was during their childhoods. These books are wonderful for people who have always wanted to chronicle their life but have been too afraid of forgetting something important. Luckily, in these journals every topic is covered, including school lives, jobs, holidays, friends and family, and each page features pretty illustrations so you never have to worry about blank spots in the book. This is a great way for your loved one to relive past memories, and for you to learn about what made your mother or grandmother into the woman she is today.

To Mum With Love (Little Tiger Gift)


Without a doubt, this is one of the mushiest books on the market this Mother's Day, so if you really want to suck up to your mum, this is the book to go for. Each page is illustrated with a cute mother and child animal duo, and tells your mum just how wonderful she is - for all the times she's done everything for you, and put up with all your issues, and showed encouragement towards you, and whole-heartedly supported you… the list goes on.

While I'm sure there are plenty of mothers out there who will appreciate this book, there will probably be an equal amount of mothers thinking, "Hmm… what bombshell is my child hiding from me right now? What are they softening me up for?" (Or maybe I'm just being pessimistic). Regardless, the cuteness of this book is obvious from the outset - you only have to look at the squishy fabric hearts on the cover to know the contents of this book will be equally as soft and mushy. Don't say I didn't warn you…

Love You, Mum X by Alana Wulff


Created as a gift for Australian teenage girls to give to their mum for Mother's Day, this book features vintage-style photos, cute illustrations and coloured text. But while some gift books of this genre can be quite sappy, this one has a bit more bite. It doesn't make excuses for typical teenage behaviour but instead embraces them, for example, although I might go to a gig rather than stay at home with my mum, and although I may not show my appreciation for her at times (especially when throwing a teenage tantrum), I still love her. And yes, she does deserve breakfast in bed every day (but that is something that she will have to discuss with dad).

With Love You, Mum at the end of every block of text, your mother will have no doubt in her mind that you care for her. In fact, if there weren't so many teenage references in this book (i.e. One Direction, formals, Facebook, school homework and the television show Jersey Shore) I would probably purchase this book for my own mum. Maybe the author should release a version for 20-something's to give to their mothers?

To My Mummy: Doodles For You


There have already been quite a few books released in this series (including for Valentine's and Father's Day), and now it's mum's turn to experience the artistic talents of her offspring. This doodle book features black and white illustrations (which can be coloured in), and gives kids the chance to draw flowers, decorate a cake or create a pretty portrait on the photo frame page. In fact, there are plenty of pages where they can draw their own additions to the pictures, meaning that their creativity can flourish! This book will provide hours of fun for younger children, and will be a lovely keepsake for mum when it's finished.

…But I Wanted A Pony! by Anne Taintor


This collection of vintage images with a twist by Anne Taintor will be sure to delight all of those mums out there who enjoy sardonic housewife humour. There are nearly 100 retro pictures in this little gift book and all of them feature a witty little saying that contradicts nicely with the image it's on. Some of the classics include a woman opening a window (with the caption simply reading 'escape') and a picture of a housewife flashing her pearly whites while washing the dishes and saying 'if by "happy" you mean trapped with no means of escape…? Then yes, I'm happy'. This book is perfect for the mum who loves to pretend she hates the domestic life, but really (secretly) thrives on it.

Mothers & Daughters: How To Stay Close And Stay Sane by Joan Sauers


This little gift book is full of handy tips and advice for both mothers and daughters, with the intention of making life as pleasant as possible for all involved. As most people know, the relationship between mothers and daughters can sometimes be tempestuous, and believe it or not, there are few books around that provide useful yet humorous tips on how to deal with this angst. The author has headed each page with either 'for mothers' or 'for daughters' in order to avoid confusion, and written the corresponding advice underneath. Some of the tips are the same for each, and some are totally contradictory (depending on the recipient of the advice), but all are relevant for the ongoing sanity of living as part of a mother-daughter duo. Read it together with your mother or read it individually and compare notes, but make sure that you at least flick through this little gem. Not only will you get a laugh, but you'll receive some of the wisdom that this book imparts.

What I Wish I Knew About Motherhood by Marty Wilson


Almost one hundred mums contributed their views (and photographs) to this book on motherhood, which was compiled by stand-up comic and writer Marty Wilson. Featuring stories from everyday women (as well as a few authors, comediennes and the occasional bloke), this book shows all aspects of motherhood. There are representations from women who have given birth to numerous children, undergone IVF, adopted, become surrogate mums, and even stories from child-free women. Men are also represented, telling stories of how they have had to take on the daunting task of looking after their children while their partner was incapacitated. Motherhood is explored freely and without restraint in this book, serving as a reminder that being a mum can be a different experience for everybody.
