GIDDIUP is almost another hole in the wall in South Melbourne. Situated on the corner of Coventry and a tiny laneway called Francis Street, GIDDIUP is a very narrow yet well-laid out café that is perfect for singles hoping to people-watch.

As a solo snacker, I love a place with a good bench. Something next to a window, so I can amuse myself while I wait, and plenty of sunshine. They also have additional seating further up and seating outside on the sidewalk, although with a cabinet full of ready-made sandwiches I get the feeling a lot of their Monday-Friday customers choose take-away.

The Weekday menu is slightly different to the Weekend menu, and unless you work or live in the area, I'd be heading over for brunch on the weekend over their M-F menu of sandwiches and salads.

Brunching on a Sunday, I had a memorable plate of poached eggs with smashed minty peas and pumpkin bread sprinkled with black sesame seeds. Paired with an almond milk chai latte, it was the perfect way to start a Sunday.

The range of weekday salads is small at a choice of 3, but they taste great and you can ask for a combination of the three available. I had the poached chicken and a grain salad with labneh and olive bread, and it was a very satisfying and flavourful homely meal.

Although the space isn't huge, they really make up for it with their food – particularly on weekends, before you do your weekly groceries at the South Melbourne Market.
