The Melbourne Aquarium recently unveiled an exciting new exhibit, entitled Giant Hammerhead Frozen in Time. This exhibit opened on May 20th, 2011 and will be open to the public for a limited time. This special event follows the popular Summer 2010/2011 Baby Hammerheads display.

The Giant Hammerhead Frozen in Time exhibit consists of a 4.5 metre long Hammerhead shark, which has been placed in a unique refrigerated enclosure. This unique display unit allows you to examine the magnificent creature in close view. You can marvel at the overwhelming size and study the colour and texture of the smooth skin and of course, the unique facial structure.

This special exhibit is currently touring the world and is designed to promote shark conservation, particularly as Hammerhead sharks have been declared an endangered species since 2008. The main reason Hammerhead sharks are overfished is because of the high demand of their fins, which are considered a delicacy and are highly profitable.

Besides the chance to view this special exhibit, until July 17th, 2011, there are a number of associated Hammerhead shark themed events occurring at the Melbourne Aquarium this Winter.

The special events include an experience entitled Giant Hammerhead Dinner, a two hour event occurring on July 2nd and 16th, 2011. This event compromises of a two-course dinner, unlimited beer, wine and soft drink, exclusive presentations by Melbourne Aquarium staff and all day entry into the aquarium prior to dinner, which is scheduled at 6.00pm.

This event is priced at $65 per adult and $25 per child (3 to 15 years). For more information on this event, please see here.

Another similar special event is entitled Giant Hammerhead Breakfast, a one hour event occurring on July 17th, 2011. This event compromises of a special cooked breakfast, served with tea, coffee and juice, Children's activities, exclusive presentations by Melbourne Aquarium staff and 'Express Entry' into the aquarium.

This event is priced at $45 per adult and $25 per child (3 to 15 years). For more information on this event, please see here.

Other special events include Friday Night Drinks, on June 24th 2011, which is an event designed for large groups and is priced at $75 per person, and a special children's event, entitled Playgroup Play Day, on July 26th, 2011. Click on the respective links for more information about both events.
