It's one thing to take a queen when she's a tiny little piece on a board, but picking on something big enough to be used as some kind of mace-like weapon is another matter entirely. If your opponent is quick to anger, there is always a risk of being bludgeoned with a rook or stabbed with a bishop.

Welcome to the world of giant chess. Like normal chess, but, well, bigger.

Playing an over-sized board game in the sun is a pleasant way to exercise your mind in an outdoor setting. Those passing by will generally be intrigued as to what is going on, so expect strategic advice from all directions. Who knows, some challengers might even step up to the plate.

Located at Whitmore Square in the city mile, the game is completely free. To play, all you need to do is to collect the key for the boxes containing the pieces from the lovely ladies at Adelaide South West Community Centre . The centre is located at 171 Sturt St, just around the corner from the chess "court". It is usually available, but to be on the safe side book ahead by calling 8203 7801.

The centre is open 9-5 Monday through to Friday, but if you wish to play out of hours or on the weekend, alternate arrangements can be made.

If you feel like shooting some hoops, the centre also has a basketball for Whitmore Square's court, and a bocce kit. Whitmore Square Mini-Olympics, anyone?
