More than a century since it appalled critics, thrilled audiences and was reviled by the press, Henrik Ibsen's 1882 Ghosts remains as engaging and challenging as ever. Independent Theatre is excited to stage Ibsen's controversial masterpiece this winter. Ghosts is set to take over Star Theatre's more intimate Theatre 2 for a strictly limited season this June and tickets are now on sale.
Deemed the 'father of modern drama', Norwegian playwright Ibsen is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare. Ghosts is a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality that shocked world audiences when first staged in Chicago, Illinois in 1882. Initially considered scandalous and indecent by Ibsen's contemporaries, Ghosts is now celebrated as a play of immense historical and cultural importance.
Directed by Rob Croser, Ghosts is a powerful psychological drama centred on infidelity, poisonous secrets, lies and an inescapable legacy of the past.
Mrs Helene Alving prepares to open an orphanage in memory of her late husband. Her son, Osvald's, return summons ghosts of the past, which she is desperate to forget. Slowly, mercilessly, inexorably, the secrets and lies of an isolated country town are stripped bare, as Mrs Alving battles with the conservative conventions of a society, where an individual's right to free thought is seen as anarchic and dangerous.
Independent Theatre's production of this spell-binding, 5-person chamber piece is a must-see for all theatre lovers this winter.
