Ghost Kitchen ~ Taiwanese street food
I went to Fiesta Malaysia at Federation Square and stopped for lunch at the Ghost Kitchen food truck. I was impressed by the customer service and the food and decided to find out more.
The menu was small, but perfect for a food truck. They had Taiwanese sausage - made from minced pork and infused with soy and honey and served in a home made black pepper sauce; Salt 'n' Pepper Popcorn Chicken - a cult classic originating from the night markets of Taipei, its free-range chicken cooked in a light batter and coated with pepper spices; Sweet Potato chips - served with a sweet and sour plum seasoning; Spring Onion Pancake - a 100% authentic homemade Taiwanese pancake with organic spring onions sourced locally from regional farmers markets, and Guo Bao ~ a Taiwanese burger with large pieces of luscious pork belly that has been slow braised overnight, then sandwiched in between their special home made steamed bun. It comes with sweet chilli paste, grounded peanuts and fresh pickles and coriander. For drinks they had winter melon tea, Taiwanese Sarsparilla, Taiwanese apple cider and Osmanthus plum juice (delicious).
Jenny who owns and runs her business started the Taiwanese food truck in 2012, when she tired of her 9 to 5 job as a graphic designer. Working the food truck makes her happier she says. She's saving for a generator so she can work at sites other than the farmers markets.
You can generally find Jenny's Ghost Kitchen Taiwanese street food truck at the
Fairfield ,
Coburg and
Substation Farmers Markets . She has a winter (hot food) and summer (cool food i.e. dumplings, cold noodles etc) menu and generally has a maximum variety of seven items.
The Ghost Kitchen caters for private functions and they have done so for private parties and an art exhibition opening. They park the food truck on the premises from where they cook and serve. What a great novelty idea, especially since the humble food truck has been given a healthy boost from the screening of the movie 'Chef' currently on our screens.
You can call Jenny on 0414 488 678 for your catering needs (for approximately $5 to $10 per dish) or catch her at one of the farmers markets. She also has a Facebook presence, so you can follow her there to find out where she's going to be next.
