With a heritage of more than 165 years, Ghee Hiang has indeed become a household name in Penang and beyond. It is one of the country's oldest food manufacturers producing authentic oriental pastries. Its emphasis on tradition, quality and flavour is evident in each and every product. These products are crafted with age-old methods and techniques introduced by a Fujian pastry chef during the tin mining and rubber industry boom in 1856.

Large tau sar pneah

Among their many offerings is the signature tau sar pneah which translates as flaky mung bean pastry. They are handmade fresh each day and come in two sizes - small (16 pieces) or large (12 pieces). You can also opt for the 'double-baked' option if you prefer a crispier texture. It was my first time tasting this darker variety, and I really enjoyed it. The pastries are amazingly delicate and crumbly. Prices start from RM12.90 per box.

Double-baked small tau sar pneah

It's not uncommon to see customers leaving the retail boutique with multiple boxes of these delicacies. I did exactly the same. The lady serving me at Beach Street was very friendly and helpful in guiding my decision-making process. One could simply buy everything!

Legendary babies

At each of the four retail boutiques, you'll receive a cheerful welcome from Ghee Hiang's legendary babies too. They are cute, chubby and adorable and will surely put a smile on your face. Opening hours and addresses can be found on their website . If you don't normally do, why not try paying them a visit next time you're in Penang? You won't regret it.
