Grab your friends for a traditional Afghani feast
Meat lovers and vegetarians alike will find plenty to be pleased about at this authentic Afghani food restaurant, The Ghan Kebab House, at Prospect Rd in Blair Athol. This restaurant does a roaring trade with customers dining in and takeaway orders. It is not flashy dining but the place to go when you need a good feed. The restaurant seats many and there is always a good crowd, which is a good sign the food must be great. The venue is a good one for family groups and caters to big groups but please book ahead, so they can get a table sorted for you.

There have been some changes since I last went. The raised carpeted sitting area has been removed as no-one sat on it. In its place is the new juice and dessert bar. The whole evening I was there on a busy Friday night, this station had no staff in attendance. The counter is so high, the customers cannot see over it, and there is a small cut out section where you can peer into the ice-cream if you bend over. This new feature could work so much better if someone was there preparing the delicious sounding beverages on the juice and shake menu. The date shake sounds yummy but no-one is ordering them as all the staff are at the main food counter.

I started with a jug of traditional yoghurt drink to share with my friends, which was a nice appetiser. You have to walk up to the front counter to order and pay and you get a docket with your order listed. The menu is large with the kebabs are available in beef, lamb or chicken. Kebabs are the most popular order.
Go here hungry, as I did, This is how much I enjoyed my meal. Image by the writer.
Our order was served quickly and arrived not very warm, so I am assuming they are precooked and heated before serving. None the less, the kebabs are still mighty tasty but would be so much more appealing straight from the hot grill. You can order various selections of kebabs including one of each type of meat. Other meals include rice dishes, a layered eggplant dish, stuffed cabbage leaves and side orders of salads. All mains are served with flat bread and a small side salad.

This is a great venue for families and very hungry people. It is crowded on a Friday night when no-one wants to cook. Despite my like warm food, I really enjoyed eating here and have been a few times. The staff are very helpful with my gluten free queries.
