A Cat among the Crows
Adelaide seems like a pretty parochial place when you move from interstate as I have just done. You'd think that there were only two teams in the AFL if you watch the news or read the paper.
However, there is hope for those of a different football faith. When I moved to Adelaide recently, I managed to track down the Adelaide Geelong Cats, a local supporter group of the 'greatest team of all', the Geelong Football Club. It's a small group at present, a committee and a few others, in its first year. And fellow supporters are warmly embraced.
First I went along to the Hilton Hotel to watch a televised game in company rather than by myself. There was no missing the Cats supporters, some of whom travel to Geelong for every Cats home game. I was quickly 'adopted' and made to feel very welcome.
Next I had the pleasure of attending my first (and second last) match at AAMI stadium, Cats vs Port Power. Thanks to the Adelaide Cats, I had a great seat with my new friends, right behind the Geelong cheer squad, right behind the goal. The cheer squad created a sense of theatre, of colour and movement, unlike any other match I'd been to. The Cats came, we saw, and together we conquered.
A different perspective on a footy cheer squad
Whatever team you follow in whatever sport, try joining up with a supporter group, particularly if you're away from home. And if you're a Cats fan, I hope to see you at a game.
It was great that there was an Adelaide Cats in 2013 having started up again that year but has sadly disappeared. I am trying to get it back but of course need help. I have created this group page on Facebook which Geelong fans in SA can be a part of and help grow to the first we can have, meet ups for games, bus trips to Geelong and Melbourne (a dream that needs to come true) and more. The more support the better!
Hi guys, I’m after three tickets in the cheer squad section for Thursday’s game against the crows...never had the opportunity to take my kids to GMHBA stadium and I’d love them to experience the atmosphere...can anyone help?
