Gewürzhaus ~ The brainchild of two German sisters from a family of four generations of passionate cooks. Finding it difficult to source spices they got in Europe, the sisters did two years of research before they opened shop in Australia. In that time they flew directly to places around the world, like Mexico and India to source and learn about the various spices. To quote their cooking school booklet, they 'offer more than 250 single origin spices and unique blends'.
The original Gewürzhaus has been standing at 342 Lygon street in Carlton for four years, with another two stores now open at 543 Malvern Road in Toorak and the Block Arcade (shop 26), at 282 Collins Street in the city.
Having sourced the spices personally and with an interest in sustainability and recycling, the sisters know exactly where the spices come from. There are no preservatives or anti caking agents, and the spices are fresh roasted and ground in Melbourne and are six months ahead in freshness of other spices on the market.
If you're intrigued by spices, and enjoy putting your love on a plate with cooking from the heart, this is the place to be. There is such a huge variety of spices to absorb, its like walking through a magical library with so much to read about and learn. I felt as if I was in a scene from that movie 'Chocolat', mixing magical spices into my cooking. On a serious note, just as variety in fruit and vegetables are good for you; spices also impart properties that can be healthy and healing, and you of course know the famous quote ~ "variety is the 'spice' of life".
French Pastilles, Paris Salt Caramels and Indian Mukhwas
They have harder to find German spices, mulled wine spice, French, Moroccan, Middle Eastern, German and Asian spices to name a few, a range of salts and rare Mexican Vanilla which they have managed to get purely because they personally went over and sourced the product direct from the supplier.
Employees are encouraged to take home a different spice each day to cook with, so they experience first hand its taste and properties, and gain thorough knowledge about the spices they then pass on to the customer.
Gewürzhaus has a webpage and a Facebook presence. They also run cooking classes and their June to September 2014 schedule is already out. Check out the details on their webpage, which also has loads of freebie recipes you can download.
