Tips for looking great this summer

Summer is just around the corner which means we get to spend more time outdoors and at the beach. We wear lighter clothing which shows off more of our body, and can't use layers of clothes to cover up like we do during winter.

My friends and I embrace summer, but as we start to plan outdoor activities, our conversations get diverted towards our weight gain over winter, our skin looking dull, and our regular catch ups are scheduled in between each other's pedicure appointments.

When we hit our 40s we do need to put more effort into maintaining our body and keep it 'well tuned'. We all age, but it doesn't mean we have to let ourselves go. Every spring I prepare myself for summer with these various beauty treatments and exercise classes.

First you need to get your skin glowing and looking good. The cold temperature, wind, and heating during winter strips away the skin's moisture. I make an appointment to meet with Julie at SkinXpert who gets my skin ready for summer with a mixture of microdermabrasion and dermaroller micro-needling.

Microdermabrasion is a process that deeply exfoliates, polishes, and increases the lymphatic drainage of skin. It uses a gentle vacuum to bring your skin in contact with a diamond coated head that gently abrades the top layer of dead skin. It can be used to help treat various skin conditions such as acne, blackheads, and dull or rough skin.

Dermaroller micro-needling. Yes this is me getting the treatment!

Dermaroller micro-needling treats acne scars, stretch marks, lines and pigmentation. The multiple needles create tiny dermal pricks to stimulate collagen and elastin production. This tricks your skin into thinking it's been damaged and repairs itself, producing more collagen and allowing moisturiser to penetrate deeper into your skin.

Julie also recommended a new treatment to help get rid of stubborn fat areas such as love handles, back fat, belly and thigh fat. Cryolipolysis fat freeze is a new treatment that has been approved as the most effective way to fat reduction. As we get older we do get trouble areas, and this is a great way to target them. Treatments can produce stunning results without having liposuction, which can have some negative side effects and complications.

Through ageing, you lose your skin's natural hydration and volume, and the latest treatment loved by celebrities which is growing in popularity is the Restylane Skin Booster. I go see Dr Anne Evans at Future You in North Adelaide, who is very experienced in her field. The skin booster hydrates my skin from within to treat the overall condition. The hyaluronic acid gel closely resembles your body's own, and is designed to balance the nutritional environment of the skin. A series of tiny injections are made under the epidermis which improves skin tone and elasticity. The improvement can be seen immediately, giving my skin a beautiful glow ready for summer.

It's also a good idea to keep on top of spider veins, sun spots, broken capillaries and milia removal, which laser at Future You can remove.

The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it's often worse because we generally don't take as many precautions to protect it. I go to Zink The Element of Hair who offer a Kerastase customised 3-step scientifically developed beauty routine method to beautify the hair, and give it a long lasting luminous finish. The first step prepares the hair by removing impurities, followed by in-depth luxurious conditioning designed to address the hair's target problem areas. The final step shields the hair from future styling and sun damage.

A good idea is to go a hair shade or two lighter for summer with a few taped extensions for volume, which can really transform a new look from winter to summer.

Exercising is something I struggle with, because it needs to be fun and something I enjoy. The best way I try to shed the winter kilos is to get some cardio into my fitness routine. I don't like the gym, and I struggle to make time to find something I enjoy.

My niece recommended I take a kickboxing class with her, which I attended at Total Toning Fitness on Henley Beach Road, Torrensville.

Boxing gives your body a real workout as well as learning some pretty good self defence skills - bonus! The sessions are 45 minutes of boxing and kick combinations using a punching bag, cardiovascular drills, body weight exercises, and finished with five minutes of conditioning and stretching.

What I enjoy about these sessions is Paul the instructor has a terrific knowledge of cardio boxing, and engages the class taking you through various combinations. Paul's attention to detail is second to none. He's friendly, skilful and entertaining, offering so much variety you can't get bored. I do believe results are achieved if you have an excellent instructor behind you.

I'm the laziest when it comes to exercising, but these classes are really motivating me. Not only am I shedding the kilos and toning, but they're giving me more energy to get through the day. With so many times to choose from, for around $12 a week you can take as many classes as you like. They also offer free classes for a week if you want to try before you sign up.

Check out Paul here as he takes you through the gym and the kickboxing class.

Remember, getting older is part of life, but you need to invest in yourself and your body and look after it. It will thank you.

Have a great summer!

Interesting article, but I would have liked to see a price list for all these treatments, it's easy to look good if you have the money to spend. How would you approach this on a budget?
