About 2 hours away from Melbourne, a community came together and turned vacant lots into sea of yellows.

Get Sunflowered is a project by RMIT's OUTR (Office Of Transformations Research) Lab in collaboration with Artist Ben Morieson as a part of the Reactivate Latrobe Valley initiative. Along with the support of 150 volunteers, site ambassadors and sponsors, the project has been a success.

Five unused or unfavourable spaces across Latrobe Valley were planted with hundred thousands of Sunflowers. The sites were once a simple paddock, overgrown tennis courts, an old hospital site and redundant service stations.

Each site was transformed through a range of sunflower designs that will allow people to have different experiences at each site and allow people to reflect on the site itself and the city.

The project intention is to consider how we can utilise redundant and vacant sites in the urban fabric to celebrate and transform our cities through the temporal event of growing beautiful sunflowers. The idea is to bring people together, making connections across the community and helping people understand that they can be an active part of their society, of their community and of the city.

The five Get Sunflowered sites are :

Traralgon
  • VRI Hall
  • The first seedling started at VRI Hall (used to be tennis courts), Queens Parade,Traralgon. Flowers were in full bloom in February.

On March 1, 2015, a 'Love 15 Garden Party' was held to celebrate the harvesting of sunflowers. Everyone went home with a free bunch of lovely sunflowers.

    Morwell
  • Corner of Buckley St and Church St of Morwell. Once a petrol station, abandoned 30 years ago, is currently blooming with sunflowers in Bee Line design.

  • On March 13, 2015, Reactivate Latrobe Valley community will be kicking off 'Bee Line Garden Party' at 3:30pm.

  • Corner of Princes Drive and Latrobe Road

  • Moe
  • Old Baw Baw Hotel, Lloyd Street with Ramble design

  • The old hospital site in Narracan Drive. Designed as 2.4km spiral maze sunflowers, this will be the finale of the Get Sunflowered Project 2015. The sunflowers have yet to bloom when we visited on March 1st, 2015.

  • Harvested flowers will be distributed to community members and green matter will be turned to mulch.

If you happened to be in the vicinity, do visit this art installation before all the sunflowers are harvested. Do check for #GetSunflowered updates for the blooming dates.
