There's a magical quality about water that can give any night that romantic touch. On Valentine's Day, take in the sights of Melbourne's glinting city lights reflecting off the water as you spend the day or evening with your special someone.

Water can be sparklier than any diamond and more full of life than a bunch of roses. Is it any coincidence that Titanic, one of the most romantic movies of all time, features plenty of water?

You may not be able to match the standards set by James Cameron's epic film, but you can create a memorable night for your date and yourself by taking advantage of the Yarra River and the bay.

Dinner Cruise on the Yarra
Nothing says 'I love you' like spending up big on that special someone- so a Valentine's Day dinner on Melbourne's premier cruising restaurant is sure to make your partner feel special. You'll have more than enough time to enjoy your opulent four-course meal, as the cruise goes for three hours.

The experience is expensive for a dinner at $155 per person, but is sure to impress your Valentine.

Titanic Theatre Restaurant
Conjure the romance of the Titanic and give a novel experience by having a Valentine's date at the Titanic Theatre Restaurant .

The restaurant may be safely on dry land, but with the interior being designed and meticulously decorated as a ship, you'll feel like you are in the famed vessel gliding over the ocean.

The night is a recreation of the final meal aboard the doomed ship, with a stage show playing out as you dine on your three-course meal. Just like on the real Titanic, there are different classes depending on how much you're paying. Steerage is the cheapest at $70 per person, whereas first class is $90 per person. The night concludes with a dance party as the ship is rescued from its fate.

The restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday nights, so you may have to wait for a year in which Valentine's Day falls when they're open. If you don't want to wait until 2014, you'll have to celebrate on the weekend before or after.

Gondola Cruise
Channel a Venetian romance with an intimate gondola cruise from Venice on the Yarra.

Every effort is made so the experience is a romantic one, with champagne supplies and music to set the mood. You and your date will be kept in comfort on the velvet seats, with blankets supplies in case it gets chilly. At the end of the one hour or one-and-a-half hour cruise you are deposited at Southbank.

Gondola cruises run year-round but Valentine's Day is their most popular day of the year, so they recommend booking as early as possible.

There are several different cruise packages on offer. The one-hour Romance Cruise, which includes wine, boxed chocolates and a bouquet of roses, costs $265 per gondola.
