When Franz Heinrich Sonnemann purchased the property at 72 Main Road Hahndorf in 1863 and established himself as a baker, little did he know that the property would remain a bakery for some 100 years! The building has continued to supply the people of the local district and tourists with an abundance of authentic German foods through to present day.



Today, the old Sonnemann's Bakery operates as the German Inn and maintains a beautiful historical feel to its interior. From the outside, the size is deceptive but as you enter through the front door, still located on the corner of the building, you can see that it has been extended and flows through to the old stables.



The interior is delightful with wooden floorboards and old stone fireplaces. The half-barrel light shades are reminiscent of its time as a grocery, licensed wine dealer and jam producer in the late 19th century. The stunning handmade wooden tables add to the aura of history and originality.

The is our favourite place to visit for lunch on our regular visits to Hahndorf and even though they were busy, the staff, as usual, were friendly and accommodating. Open from 7.30 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and 7 am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday, the offers breakfast, lunch or coffees and cakes.



The menu is extensive. Breakfast ranges from toast to croissants, pancakes, waffles and omelettes. Or maybe be traditional and enjoy a fantastic German breakfast of kransky and accompaniments.

Lunch comes in many different forms. As simple or elaborate as you like, you can choose a bowl of chips, pizza, pasta, risotto, burger, salad or fantastic South Australian seafood. On our most recent visit, we enjoyed a Belly Burger and Calamari served with chips, salad and tartare sauce. The portions are generous and prices reasonable. This meal including two coffees was less than $50! If you planning a visit here, don't plan to eat for the rest of the day! Dietary requirements such as gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian are available and I have no difficulty selecting a fantastic gluten-free meal.



If you feel like partnering your meal with alcohol, the is licensed and has a great range of Adelaide Hills and other wines, Australian beers and ciders as well as German beer.

As someone who does not add sugar to coffee, the quality of coffee is incredibly important. Good, well-made coffee will not be bitter and the sweetness of the milk will be enough. Coffee at the is a delight with a great choice of coffees, teas, juices, soft drinks, milk drinks and smoothies for those not wanting alcohol. There is a great range of cakes to indulge in. Choose from German or Australian delights with fantastic gluten, dairy and sugar-free options available.
