Coming to Perth this May, presented by Palace Cinemas in conjunction with Luna Cinemas and German Films, is the German Film Festival. I was fortunate enough to be invited along to the media launch night on the 19th of April at Palace Raine Square, where we were fortunate enough to see
SISI & I.
The festival has over 30 films this year, showcasing the best contemporary German, Austrian and Swiss cinema direct from some major European film festivals. Some of this year's key film selections direct from the Berlinale, a music-focused retrospective, a focus on female filmmakers and the popular sidebar Kino for Kids, presented by the Goethe-Institut.
Some of the movies included in this year's festival are - all of the below, as are many of the movies featured in the festival, are making their Australian Premiere;
The Fox - based on the true story of director Adrian Goiginger's great-grandfather, The Fox is a moving tale about an extraordinary and unusual friendship between a soldier and a fox cub.
A Thousand Lines - inspired by true events, this movie follows journalist Juan Romero in his quest to investigate inconsistencies in a cover story by another award-winning reporter and uncover the truth.
The Teacher's Lounge - is a tense drama looking at a school as a microcosm of society.
Till the End of the Night - an undercover investigator gets into a fake relationship with a recent parolee to infiltrate a drug gang.
Family Affairs - What is supposed to be a nice relaxing Spanish family get-together is flipped on its head when the newlyweds turn up with the new in-laws.
SISI & I - this movie is a reinterpretation of the Sisi myth, based on the writings of Irma von Sztaray - Empress Elisabeth of Austria & Queen of Hungry's (Sisi) final lady-in-waiting before her death.
One thing to be aware of - many of these films are in German with English subtitles.
The festival is happening all around Australia and will be in Perth from the 4th til the 24th of May 2023. The films will be showing at Palace Raine Square, Luna Leederville and Luna on SX in Fremantle. Details of all the films, session times and bookings can be found on their dedicated
website .
The festival promises to bring a variety of new films, directors and stars to the Australian public, something not to be missed for lovers of foreign films.
