Glühwein, pretzels, sausages,gingerbread and more
Lots of traditional Christmas food and ornaments
For those of you who have visited a Christmas market in Germany before will understand how wonderful these markets are, full of delicious food, warming glühwein and lots of traditional things to buy for Christmas. Now there is a German Christmas Market in Melbourne to visit and enjoy. Even though the weather is not cold and wintry in the southern hemisphere at that time of year, (although the way Melbourne's weather has been of late, you never know), the market has a lot of the German Christmas traditions on offer.
There will be traditional German food like pretzels, gingerbread, sausages and delicious Christmas biscuits. The smell of glühwein will permeate the market and instil an atmosphere of pre- Christmas anticipation and European traditions. In case of the weather being warm and balmy, cold glühwein is also an option. For those who prefer to wash down their bratwurst sausage with something else, there will be beer, of course, as well.
Try some of the delicious Christmas cakes and biscuits
Traditional German ornaments, as well as more modern, handcrafted jewellery and gifts will make it easy to buy gifts and take the worry out of Christmas shopping. Children can make Christmas ornaments and take part in Santa's obstacle course.
The German Christmas market takes place on the 25th November from 5-9 pm and will be followed by bilingual Christmas carols. All proceeds from the market go to the Deutsche Schule Melbourne, a German-English bilingual school in Fitzroy North. Check out the Facebook page for more information and updates.
