My Family and Other Animals by Gerald DurrellAdapted by Janys ChambersDirected by Elizabeth Munro and Mark G. NagleThis well travelled production is now showing at the Genesian Theatre near Sydney's CBD.
You may have heard of the Durrell family via Gerald Durrells' memoir on British television in the series
The Durrells, currently on
Netflix. Set in 1935, an eccentric English family - four children and their widowed mother plus their dog Roger - arrive on the sunny shores of Corfu to begin a new life.
Janys Chambers' stage adaptation was first shown at York Theatre Royal and this production continues making ingenious and impressive eyebrow raising decisions to bring to life all the inhabitants of Durrell's cherished land. They talk, walk, fly, squawk, slither and swim. Theatre at it's best!
The Genesian theatre is a fantastic, authentic venue which is still hanging on in there at 420 Kent Street. I've said it before and I'll say it again ... I love it at the Genesian, it's great. Remember to stop off at Sambal Indonesian restaurant (5 or so doors away), at 432 Kent Street before you arrive - it's definitely worth it.
My Family and Other Animals reveals the complexities of family life!
