Plenty of excited fans crowded the entrance to Sydney's State Theatre. It was the widely anticipated Sydney premiere opening night of Georgy Girl, The Seekers Musical. The Seekers fans, celebrities and the curious were out in force.

All the beautiful people were in attendance and the air was buzzing with excitement. I was fortunate as a reviewer to have front row seats.

I was just a baby when The Seekers first started out and gained recognition worldwide. I remember my parents playing their tunes and feeling such a happy vibe. So for me, this musical was an introduction to discovering the story behind the scenes of their rise to fame. The moment the lights and music start, the story vibrantly unfolds. Commencing in Melbourne, where sweet girl next door Judith Durham (Pippa Grandison), is singing in a jazz club and meets three Australian guys, Athol Guy (Glaston Toft), Keith Potger (Phillip Lowe) and Bruce Woodley(Mike McLeish).

The set changes work seamlessly depicting the time period and how the folkish Seekers fitted in, highlighting their early days as a folk-pop quartet in Melbourne and their path to stardom.

The colour and music of the Swingin' Sixties explodes on stage with the talented dancers showing the contrast of that period, stemming from a British cultural phenomenon which made an impact on fashion, dance, art and music. The music and songs of that era were vibrant, creative and compelling. This was well recreated by the dancers in their brightly coloured 60s outfits and well choreographed energetic moves.

Pippa Grandison had a challenging task playing Judith Durham, but aced it with her stunningly strong voice and mesmerising stage presence. Her interpretation of Judith's reserved shy nature was beautiful presented and her vocals were clear and precise with an astonishing high range. I was thrilled to hear her beautiful singing.

The easy connection with each of the band member is obvious. They worked well together producing beautiful harmonies with the melodies and the bantering between them was believable and charming, showing how their strong friendship had formed.

The script if filled with jovial moments narrated to the audience by Ron Edgeworth played by Adam Murphy. He carries the story through with his cheeky likeable personality, highlighting each part with humour and engaging sensitivity. I found him very appealing, funny and entertaining. I considered him a real stand out in the show.

Ian Stenlake is considerably handsome and dashing as The Seekers' tour manager John Ashby. Sophie Carter does a fine job as Beverley Sheehan, Judith's sister. She is enthusiastic in her projection and often comical. Eddie Jarrett performs his part as a stand out too, with his concise vocal projection and strong presence. All the dance ensemble are fantastic, so animated and energetic with their crazy dance moves. Todd Goddard (Judith's father Bill Cock) and Kirsten King (Judith's mother Hazel Cock) performed beautifully between their acting parts and quick change to dancing sets.

The sound by Julian Spink and lighting by Trudy Dalgliesh was ideal for each scene and each set and costume change appeared to happen by magic which is a credit to Director Gary Young, Set Designer Shaun Gurton, Choreographer Michael Ralph and Costume Supervisor Christiana Plitzco.

Director Gary Young has done a fine job with this musical. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I could see it was a challenging job working with so many short scenes to get the span of their story out. The musical supervision by Stephen Amos supports Musical Director Stephan Gray well to lead the 11- piece orchestra through all the swingin' 60s tunes and The Seekers signature sentimental songs. A wonderful story by Patrick Edgeworth, interpreted well by script consultant Graham Simpson.

The highlight of the evening was to see the original four Seekers join the fantastic cast on stage for an emotional standing ovation. It was a fabulous night and I thoroughly recommend you seeing this vibrant production that has touched the hearts of music lovers young and old.
