The Seekers were an Australian group that had many number one hits during the "swinging sixties".
Georgy Girl The Seekers Musical takes us on a journey from their first meeting to modern day. The story by
Judith Durham's brother-in-law,
Patrick Edgeworth, is presented as a series of musical vignettes. These are connected with humorous asides and narration by the character of
Ron Edgeworth played by
Adam Murphy.
The
State Theatre is a beautiful intimate venue which is perfect for the staging of this musical. The set design is very clever utilising a series of dividing screens that act as doorways, and a video screen to play historic footage added another dimension to the production. The costumes were interesting and fun and captured the essence of the sixties as well as the metamorphosis of
Judith Durham and her individual style.
The ensemble do a fantastic job playing their roles with high energy and humour and the lead roles are particularly well cast.
Pippa Grandison is fantastic as
Judith Durham and the quartet were convincing in their musical renditions. At times I swear it was
The Seekers performing.
Georgy Girl is neither a flashy or sophisticated production, rather it has a simple naïveté that complements the spirit of
The Seekers.
Act two deals with the band split and issues that confronted
Judith's life which resulted in many of the audience members shedding a tear or two. That being said you will leave the theatre with a smile on your face and probably be humming
Morning Town Ride the next day.
