George Reserve is a scenic recreation area, located at
Reserve/@-32.7150783,152.0739857,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x65728e90928c07df!8m2!3d-32.7150783!4d152.0739857 Wanda Beach , on the way to Soldiers Point. It is part of the Port Stephens region, which is a holiday destination 2.5 hours north of Sydney and 1 hour north of Newcastle. This reserve in particular, is often enjoyed by tourists and locals alike, as it has one of the best views across the water to the mouth of Port Stephens. It may not be on the usual tourist trail, however when visitors drive past to explore
Soldiers Point , or visit the
local boat ramp , they can't help but stop and take in the sweeping 180 degree views over the water.
George Reserve now has brand new picnic facilities, much to the delight of the locals. Why not pack up the esky, grab your swimming costume and spend the day at the Point this weekend!
In early 2020, this reserve had an upgrade with new bench seating near the small playground, a roof structure built over the existing BBQ and a new undercover picnic area with 3 long tables. This larger seating area now makes this an ideal venue for family get-togethers and children's birthday parties.
If you have smaller children they will love the small playground nearby, which has a climbing frame, bouncy toy and swings. Ensure you take the bucket and spade as well, for fun on the sand after your BBQ. If you visit at
low tide , there is a shallow area on Wanda Beach, just in front of the reserve, which is perfect for a splash with your bub or toddler.
When you have finished your BBQ and wish to explore, take a walk down to Wanda Beach and enjoy the views, as well as the local pelicans and Corellas that make it their home.
If you walk up the beach to the
left, you will find the Soldiers Point Jetty to walk along, which often has people
fishing along its length. If you take a short walk up the road from the jetty, you will also find Bannisters Hotel, Rick Steins Seafood Restaurant,
Cheeky Dog Bar ,
Soldiers Point Bowling Club and a
Big 4 , across the road from each other.
If you stand at George Reserve and walk
right up Wanda Beach, you will get to a walking path at the end which takes you around Wanda Wanda Headland. This takes you to the next small beach along, which also has a small playground and picnic area at
Cairns Reserve/@-32.7235088,152.0820806,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x3d308dc146a986fc!8m2!3d-32.7235088!4d152.0820806 Bob Cairns Reserve .
George Reserve has parking, toilet facilities, an outdoor shower for after a swim and bins dotted around the reserve, so you can clean up after your BBQ. It may look like a quiet little BBQ area from first glance, however there is a lot that you can do at this scenic reserve - for all ages. Take your snags, your swimming costume, your camera and your fishing rod (with NSW license) and spend the morning at George Reserve.
If you're anything like the locals, you may never want to leave...
