is an English pub located at the entrance to Gold Creek Village in Nicholls, fifteen minutes north of the city.
Gold Creek Village is a popular tourist attraction with the Dinosaur Museum, Cockington Green, Canberra Walk In Aviary, Canberra Reptile Zoo and quaint shops within the same complex. As you drive in, is an impressive sight as you drive up the hill, built in 1980 in the iconic black and white Tudor style.
It is a popular pub for all ages with families, couples, friends and tourists stopping for a cold drink and a pub lunch.
There is outside seating for 300 people out the front of the pub under umbrellas or up on the grassy hill next to the beer garden. Depending on the weather, there is usually plenty of seating to catch some sun or relax in the shade.
Inside is like walking into a real English pub with low ceilings, wooden panelling and historical English paintings on the walls. Down one end of the pub is a working fireplace, which gets crackling in Winter and cooler evenings. This pub is a cosy place to enjoy in winter with live music, singing and beers by the fire. With only a handful of pubs in Canberra, this ol' English Pub is a must for any pub-lover.
For an individual touch, there are beer steins and chamber pots (ie. potties!) hanging from the roof, much to the amusement of our English friends.
At the other end of the pub there is a new dining area with plastic windows that roll up for a cool breeze in the warmer months, or remain shut with industrial heaters in the cooler months. There is also more seating around the back, with a section for smokers.
When you have chosen from the Menu, order at the bar and receive a buzzer. There are classic English pub choices such as Guinness Pot Pies, Bangers and Mash and a Ploughman's Lunch as well as paninis, pasta, steaks, burgers and salads. Every time we have been, we have enjoyed the pub food and the tasty chips are a hit with the kids. For a full menu see
here and
here for the $9 Kids Menu.
There are
21 beers on tap to try out as well as Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday Night food specials. Live music is a highlight of this pub, with talented local musicians performing on the weekends and evenings during the week. See their
website for details.
Our family and friends have enjoyed on several occasions. We keep coming back for the atmosphere in the beer garden, live music, large food servings and the quaint buildings in Gold Creek Village. For an article on what else there is to see in Gold Creek Village, see
here .
So if you are heading out to Gold Creek to visit the number of attractions, allow plenty of time for a leisurely lunch at . It is easy to while away some time relaxing in the beer garden, catching up with friends and tasting some of the 21 beers on offer.
It is also the quaint Tudor style of this pub that holds the attraction for locals and tourists alike.
This Spring and Summer would be the ideal time to enjoy this ol' English pub at its' finest.
