On Sunday night I was lucky to catch George Dimarelos, stand-up comedian, in his final show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Downstairs in the Grand Mercure Hotel.
In a tiny sold-out room, the very tall and handsome George told personal stories about growing up in Melbourne as a first generation Greek Australian. From dealing with his Greek Mum's guilt trips, to Dad's obsession with the six o'clock news, George gives the audience a lived experience of trying to live in between two cultures, and the challenges of trying to 'blend' into Anglo Australian culture, even when it feels unnatural and restrictive.
George works the room with stories about his 'late blooming' with girls and how to identify another 'Aussie' overseas, whilst restraining his 'inner-Greek dancer' at music festivals. From riding the Trans Mongolian Express to Ibiza all night dance parties, George delivers a vivacious and funny account of trying to express his natural Greek Australian identity whilst blending in to 'Aussie' mainstream culture.
Yet underneath all the laughs, the audience knows that George is delivering an important message about cultural identity in Australia, whilst getting us to laugh at ourselves, and examine our own identity and what that means in a diverse society.
