Operated by
Resorts World Cruises , Genting Dream has been departing the Port Klang Cruise Terminal since mid-2022. The ship offers three-night cruises to both Singapore and Penang as well as four-night cruises to just Singapore. In addition to these round-trip voyages, travellers also have the option of a one-way trip between Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur) and Singapore. We chose this shorter option simply for the experience.
Genting Dream cruise ship
Embarking at Port Klang was a breeze. The terminal has an air-conditioned departure hall for passengers awaiting boarding. We spent some time there after check-in while waiting for our turn to pass through immigration, customs and security. It was all very well organised. The linkway and bridges were easy to navigate too.
Oceanview stateroom
One thing you'll need to be aware of though is the ship's passport procedure. Every passenger is required to hand over their passports upon boarding! The next time you'll see this precious document is on the morning of your disembarkation.
Oceanview stateroom
Once aboard the ship, we headed straight to our oceanview stateroom on deck 11. The room comes with two single beds and a sofa. It was clean, comfortable and spacious enough for the both of us. The view was great as well.
View from the stateroom
In total, the ship has 1,674 staterooms to accommodate a maximum of 3,352 passengers. With this number of people, congestion is bound to be an issue at times and social etiquette norms may not necessarily be followed. The behaviour of some social groups unfortunately left a negative impression on me. Besides interior, oceanview and balcony staterooms, the ship also has Palace suites which are located within a private enclave of the vessel. I might give one of these a go next time.
Chinese set menu dinner
For dinner, we enjoyed a Chinese set menu at the upper Dream Dining Room. It was nothing short of a feast. Soon after sitting down, we were served honey barbecue chicken as appetiser. This was followed by pork soup and a main course of four dishes with steamed rice. The prawn dish was very generous in size and had a spicy kick to it. The fish was steamed perfectly with ginger while the pork chops were sauteed beautifully in marmite sauce. The vegetables accompanied these dishes well. And finally, there's sea coconut with longan, peach gum and papaya for dessert.
Affinity
Passengers can enjoy one of three inclusive restaurants during each meal time. While the upper Dream Dining Room serves a Chinese set menu, the lower Dream Dining Room offers a Western semi-buffet featuring international as well as Indian vegetarian, jain and non-vegetarian dishes. For halal cuisine, simply head to buffet-style restaurant The Lido on deck 16. Yes, you read it right, this ship is certified halal-friendly - the first of its kind in the world! The breakfast menu here included salad, yoghurt, bread, nasi lemak, chicken rendang, potato curry puffs, anchovies buns, fried rice, etc on the morning we were onboard. If you're still hungry after all that, an outdoor snacks corner is available in between meal times.
Affinity
As for entertainment, Zodiac Theatre is the place to be in the evenings. There's a line-up of shows ready to excite your senses.
Affinity was amazing and really captivated me. It managed to hold my attention throughout. The story is told of a boy and a girl bringing together their companions to navigate life's journey.
Pool
Other activities onboard include going for a dip in the outdoor pool, challenging yourself on the rock climbing wall, experiencing VR and AR technologies, gliding on a 35-metre zipline, having a mini golf session, playing games in the arcade, learning how to dance, and much more. For those who are interested, the bridge can be viewed from a dedicated room on deck 15. Our Swedish captain Robert Bodin has been commanding vessels since 2008 and is well experienced in the role. The various displays in the room were rather informative too.
Bridge
In contrast to a near perfect embarkation, I'm sad to say that the disembarkation procedure proved to be quite chaotic. Indian nationality passport holders were ushered into the dining room while the rest of us (Singaporeans and other nationalities) assembled in the theatre. As we left the ship, we were met by long queues at Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre. It took us a significant amount of time to pass through immigration.
