Must Try Japanese Ramen in Brisbane's Southside

Fancy a bowl of ramen this weekend? As the temperature drops, a hot bowl of soupy goodness will keep you extra cosy this winter.

Genkotsu Ramen makes traditional Japanese ramen and has been a local favourite since 2015. This tiny ramen shop is tucked away behind a small door next to Momo Chicken, a place for decent Korean fried chicken, on the far left of Runcorn Plaza. There may be a small queue at dinner time, but you usually won't have to wait too long. When you enter, you are greeted warmly by the staff and the rustic interior décor will give you the impression of a traditional noodle stall in Japan.

There is a decent variety of ramen to choose from. Shoyu base is always a classic, which is a soy sauce broth. Other familiar options include Shio, Miso and Black Garlic. Genkotsu Ramen also whips up some interesting combinations like tempura prawn in matcha ramen and soft shell crab ramen for the more adventurous.




I usually enjoy their soft shell crab ramen but opted to try their Black Garlic Shio ramen this time. I often find this particular ramen a bit oily due to the extra garlic flavouring. However, I happily found Genkotsu's version to be nicely balanced, with the egg cooked just right with a gooey yolk and the pork deliciously tender. A thumbs up from me!



If you prefer to add some condiments to your ramen, Genkotsu has plenty to offer. Choose from extra shallots, seaweed, bamboo or even karaage chicken for additional protein.

Their side dishes include agedashi tofu and takoyaki. There is an option for yuzu mayonnaise on your Takoyaki. Citrus-flavoured mayo is quite refreshing on the palate and I am keen to go back to try this one. (Genkotsu Ramen is also open in Toowong but the menu is slightly different to their Runcorn joint and you might find yuzu mayonnaise missing on the menu)

As the chilly weather kicks in along with the rain, I will be headed to Genkotsu for my soupy comfort food this winter. And so should you.
