With the plethora of fantastic cafes and restaurants dotting every available surface of the Gold Coast, it takes something special to make jaded diners and coffee addicts sit up and take notice. The Japanese-inspired Genki Cafe certainly delivers in that respect. The central structural pillar has been extended with painted vines and flowers to resemble a cherry blossom crawling over the ceiling, a delightful piece of whimsy which is also reflected in the tasty menu choices, from a range of fresh and healthy options to the more robust but still moderately sized golden curry served with freshly crumbed and fried chicken pieces.
Breakfasts here are enormously popular, with all manner of western egg, avocado, vegetarian and salmon options pouring out with astonishing speed and consistent quality from the open one-man kitchen tucked in behind the counter. Fresh herbs are used freely for garnish and flavour. If you enjoy a sweet breakfast, you would be hard pressed to go past the caramel banana pancakes served with a generous scoop of ice cream.
The crowning glory of this establishment however, is its dessert display. Such homemade treasures as raw banana cake, rich and gooey chocolate brownies and generous gluten free carrot muffins with the world's greatest cream cheese icing sit there, rustic and tempting, waiting to be devoured with a steaming cup of fresh, hot coffee.
Ultimately, this small and unassuming cafe in the heart of Palm Beach offers up a no-frills, health conscious, interesting and always delicious array of food with fast and friendly service at a price that won't require a second mortgage. Highly recommended.
