The stars shine bright, on and off stage
Genesis was written by Australian playwright, William Hinz, and is currently being presented by A Very Theatre Company and performed at Metro Arts in Brisbane City.
At first glance, with its simplistic set design and only the two characters on stage, this presents as an uncomplicated tale. Appearances can be deceiving.
A religious girl and an atheist boy, Izzy and Paul, spent a childhood connected, sharing their dreams and questioning all things big picture. Both with curious minds the play to and fros between time frames to show that Life takes them in separate directions. A decade later, they meet again in their home town at the funeral of Paul's mother.
Jack McGirr is totally likeable as Paul, and manages to evoke the lad at different stages of his personal development. There is a device that helps the audience to determine Paul's age throughout, but you know, half way in the audience can pick where Paul is in his life as his posture changes as do his facial expressions.
