Down in the basement of the Butterfly Club there's all manner of experimental theater ranging from the shocking to sublime for those who venture into the late night city.

I found myself on such an adventure to see a cabaret show and my destination, the Butterfly Club is a strange place hidden at the end of an alleyway off Little Collins Street. In the daytime it's almost invisible but late at night it comes alive with flashing lights and an interesting promise of the unusual.

The bar is worth a sticky beak at. It's shelves are packed with nostalgic objects from the 70s 80s and 90s and lit only by lamps and Christmas lights it creates a crazy cosy corner to enjoy a bevvy or two.

The show I had come to see was Gender Spanner, a one woman cabaret show developed by artist Jessica McKerlie exploring gender experiences through song and costumes.

There was plenty of audience participation with two volunteers donning masks and being invited on stage. The ending accumulated with McKerlie doing a comic and very unsexy strip tease. She slapped sticky notes on her self on which she had written various labels and belted out a few tunes while strumming her ukulele.

While the show had promising parts it needed more of a polish, especially when the audience was left waiting for her ukulele to re-tune again for several minutes, all in all some funny moments but still needed a bit more work.
