If you love good old fashioned country markets, then take a look at the Gembrook and Yarra Junction Markets both held on the 4th Sunday of the month and 29 km apart through beautiful country side.

First stop for us was Gembrook market , situated at the famous tourist attraction Puffing Billy Station. This is a cute community market where everyone seems to know each another.

We have been to this market on a few occasions and each time there have been different stalls selling a wide variety of items, such as freshly picked apples from the trees at Silvan, $8 for 6 kilos, Gembrook knitters group, locally grown vegetables, plants, bread, flowers, hats, preserves, photography, craft, community BBQ, jumping castle, clairvoyant, a free community swap stall where you can donate unwanted items and take something you would like, along with many other stalls (about 45 stalls in total)

The markets main focus is to promote sustainable living. It would be nice to see more people out supporting the market and the locals selling the produce. Although I probably wouldn't make the 1 hour 20 minute trip just for the market, it's a great addition to a day out.

Gembrook Market is on the 4th Sunday of each month from 9am-2pm, located on Main Rd Gembrook.

For the kids, there is a nice little park adjacent to the Puffing Billy station.

Next stop was Yarra Junction market, approximately 29 km from Gembrook. Take the Gembrook -Launching place Rd until reaching Warburton Hwy, turn right onto it and follow it to Yarra Junction.

The drive between the two markets is beautiful, especially in autumn, where the colours of the deciduous trees shine against green backdrop. This picture is approximately half way along Gembrook-Launching Place Rd and is of a deciduous tree farm, it's even more beautiful in real.

Yarra Junction market is on the main road opposite Woolworths, there is plenty of car parking available next to the market. This market is very small, with a maximum of 30 stalls, which vary as stall holders come and go. If you want to sell things at the market, you can book a stall site for only $10, which could be great to sell unwanted items.

When we visited there were many trash and treasure stalls, and I got a lovely child's cane rocking chair for $14. There were also plant stalls, jam preserves, a new toy stall selling Thomas and various other branded toys, second hand book stalls, tools and so on.

I wouldn't rave about this market but you never know what you might find.

Yarra Junction market is held on every 2nd and 4th Sunday from 8am - 12 pm.

Happy market shopping!
