I'm a freelance writer who lives on the Bellarine Peninsula. I enjoy finding new things to see and do in the beautiful area that I live in. I'm also a booklover- see my reviews at acomfychair.com/profile/52/
Whenever I go to visit the Melbourne Museum, I love to wander through their Dynamic Earth exhibit, where they have a selection of crystals, rocks and minerals on display from all over the world. They vary from very plain everyday-looking rocks to brightly-coloured, glittering formations, and you can't help but be amazed, knowing that these were naturally formed and found on our planet.
Unfortunately, Melbourne can be a little too far to travel every time you want to admire some pretty rocks. Luckily, the Geelong Gem and Mineral Club will be holding their annual Gem, Crystal & Jewellery Show at the Vines Road Community Centre in Hamlyn Heights on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of November , which means that you can get your mineral fix without having to travel too far. Members of the group will have a collection of minerals, crystals and fossils on display (for both viewing and purchase) from all over Australia and the world. But if that isn't enough to whet your appetite, they will also be holding demonstrations for various jewellery-making techniques, including glass fusing, silversmithing, and faceting. Would-be jewellers can purchase special lapidary tools and findings to complete their own creative pieces of jewellery, or they can purchase the precious stones necessary to make that special piece.
This event will be held at the Vines Road Community Centre in Hamlyn Heights
There will be tea, coffee, light lunches and refreshments available at the centre, as well as lucky dips, raffles, competitions and a Fluorescent Mineral Display. The Gemini International Cabochon Cutting Competition will also be taking place on the day- this is a very particular craft, where stones are cut to exact measurements and creatively displayed in a piece of jewellery or metalwork. It takes quite a bit of artistic skill to do, but the results are often very unique and lovely to look at.
A whole variety of gems, crystals, minerals and fossils will be on display over the weekend
If you enjoy jewellery-making, or have a fascination for rocks, gems, minerals and fossils, you'll feel right at home amongst the artisans and traders at the Gem, Crystal & Jewellery Show.
