Weekend For Rockhounds
Every year since 1983 the North Brisbane Lapidary Club hosts a Gem festival on the first weekend in March. It's the perfect opportunity to find that special gift either for yourself or someone you know. This year the Gem and Jewellery Festival is on 5th and 6th of March at Bracken Ridge State High School. Come along to see one of the best gem shows in the whole of SE QLD.
Admission to the show is $4 for adults and $1 for children or $8 per family. Inside the hall you will find exhibitors selling rough gems, faceted stones, cabochons ready for mounting, jewellery, fossils, beads, mineral specimens, lapidary tools and much more. There will also be faceting demonstrations throughout the weekend for those who like to observe the technical skill involved.
Visitors have the opportunity to view one of the largest displays of coloured gemstones at any one time - including sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tanzanite, beryl, chrysoprase and opal. So if you are after a particular gemstone, chances are you will be able to find it at the gem show instead of searching online. You also have the advantage of talking directly with gem dealers and gaining their advice and recommendations.
Rockhounds will be pleased at the quality and variety of Australian and imported mineral specimens on offer. New Agers will also be smiling ear to ear when they see the gorgeous collection of crystals for sale too. Lapidary hobbyists will also have the opportunity to view and purchase gem and rock cutting and polishing machines.
But it's not all about the adults! Children will be entertained with lucky dips and fossicking activities including buying a bucket of gem wash. Perhaps your kids will find some garnets, zircons, or quartz crystals! There will also be a chance to win jewellery prizes, so if you are feeling extra lucky why not purchase a couple of tickets. Hot and cold refreshments will be available throughout the whole weekend to keep everyone happy.
