Sydney, we have an ice cream problem. A pleasant one, nonetheless. Why so true? Another Gelato Messina has opened up in Crown Street Surry Hills. This piece of gelato heaven real estate opened their doors to their Sydney fans on the 6th of August 2012, only a few days after I moved to Sydney. Last night I had my chance to try some of the ice cream that Sydney is raving on about.
You're in ice cream heaven. This Gelato Messina is not far from Albion Street, and is opposite that little park in the heart of Surry Hills. Walk down the nearby hill and you find yourself at Central train station.
The store is a bit too small - pity about that. Expect similar ambience and music to their Darlinghurst store. The abundance of ice cream flavours and choices (too many to recall) causes another problem. Which one to go for? If in doubt go for two. It takes two to tango in anything, and it just goes to show that my poached fig and marsala and my coconut and lychee combinations were a match made in heaven.
You need to be in the mood for ice cream. Taking my first bite, my taste buds felt like they were exploding as the ice cream was full of flavour. Definitely feels like you're getting your money's worth with two flavours smack bang into one: not just coconut but coconut and lychee. It felt like I was having a bite of a real coconut, and it definitely didn't taste like the processed kind. For my second scoop of poached figs in marsala, the fig pieces were just sensational and tasty. The ice cream can melt a little bit too quickly at times, yet I devoured my taste sensation in half an hour. The day was about to turn into night and Sydney's warm day was about to turn into a cold night.
Beginning to devour my coconut and lychee/poached figs in marsala combination
The service is super quick and the store was incredibly busy. You will understand the reasons as to why this is happening once you try a scoop of Gelato Messina. I was able to try a scoop of the pistachio that one of my friends had. The strong nutty flavour was also enjoyed there. My friends also enjoyed a spoonful of my coconut and lychee choice in return.
