Gelato Messina Pop-Up

There are many things that I am currently learning to do so as to improve my current lifestyle in these Covid times. I am attempting to drink decaf after 6pm (a constant struggle), to eat my dinner before 8pm and to ensure that I am exercising each day. These small changes can make a tiny difference to the way that I feel, but at the end of the day, I find myself looking for the sweetness in life.

Luckily Melbourne is home to an abundance of choices for the sweet-toothed among us, from bakeries selling delectable delicacies to candy stores dedicated to selling a large range of confectionery, restaurants paying homage to chocolate and of course, let us not forget about the amazing ice cream and gelato shops.

Melbourne continues to invent ingenious ways of allowing us to spend our weekends (or weekdays) in sweet decadence, in the form of pop-ups, a short term setup that can be found in unique settings. Gelato Messina has saved the ice-cream fanatics of Brunswick East (or those within 5km) by opening up a small temporary location within a factory setting. I happened to be on one of my vitamin D walks in the sunshine, wandering around the area, exploring all the side streets when I spotted the sign, inviting me inside. Within the pop-up, the ice-cream and gelato cabinet is set to the right of the warehouse, offering up twenty different taste sensations including an impressive selection of vegan and dairy-free options.

The presentation itself is mouthwatering with the ice-cream folded into beautiful swirls, tucked inside containers behind a glass countertop. Every flavour that is offered up to the public is unique to the Messina family, this hard-working team makes a point of creating everything from scratch, using fresh ingredients such as milk from their own dairy farm and chocolate from a sourced single-origin cacao. If this alone has not tempted you, then reading the menu board surely will.

The options are plentiful as well as slightly kooky, ranging from Pandan Coconut, Salted Caramel & White Chocolate, Tres Leche, Passionfruit, Chocolate Fondant Tiramisu and even Apple Pie. Each week there are rotating super specials, so if you cannot find something to suit your tastes, I will be surprised.

Passionfruit and Raspberry Ice-Cream Cone
On this evenings walk, I selected Passionfruit and Raspberry as I wanted tantalising fresh fruity flavours to act as a palate cleanser before my dinner and I was not disappointed. I walked home happily with my cone piled high with creamy gelato, much to the amusement of people passing by.

On another occasion, I have also tried the vegan Pandan and Coconut sorbet which is creamy on the palate without the heavy cream aspect and the salted coconut and mango salsa which offers up a world of smooth fruity mouthfuls.

For those not within the 5km radius, the team of Messina have thought of you, with options to order a takeaway tub for delivery via the app Deliveroo, meaning you can order your ice-cream on your couch in your PJs.

The Gelato Messina pop-up is open Monday to Friday from 4-8pm and Saturday to Sunday from 2-8pm at 136 Weston Street, Brunswick East.

After all, a lockdown is always better with a little ice-cream.
