Ask anyone lately what they've been up to with their kids and they'll soon mention Gelatissimo, the new café and gelato bar that has opened up at 174 Victoria Street, Mackay. Ask my husband what he's been up to without the kids and he'll mention the same place!



Gelatissimo offers the authentic taste of Italian gelato for as little as $5 a cup. The gelato is made fresh daily and there is an extensive range of flavours to choose from. My youngest loves the coconut flavour, while my eldest is determined to go chocolate all the way. Recently during Chinese New Year they even made green tea and lychee flavours for the more adventurous and both were delicious. The display of gelato flavours is almost a work of art in itself, curving around the counter and often surrounded by people debating the best choice.



Gelatissimo is an Australian franchise that opened first in Sydney and is now one of the biggest gelato franchises in the world. Michael Cullen, the local Franchise Gelatissimo Manager, opened Mackay's store just before Christmas and word has got around about the fresh taste, and excellent service offered by his friendly team.



My family now makes a point of treating ourselves to a gelato in Michael's airconditioned café while enjoying a game of snakes and ladders (I used to carry it in my bag if I needed to divert them; and now it's become something of a tradition) at one of their comfortable tables.



The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the retro posters surrounding you only add to the feel good vibe you have while you eat. If I am lucky the boys want to play a second game of snakes and ladders and I then have an excuse to order one of their gourmet coffees; or eye off the selection of cakes they have on display. I haven't succumbed to the cakes yet, usually because I am congratulating myself on having chosen one of their 100% fat free sorbets to eat and I don't want to undo all the good work. But I can feel myself weakening!
