The is the perfect spot if you are looking for some peace and quiet on a sunny afternoon. The Tea House was opened by the
Friends of the Botanic Gardens and has been running for 20 years. Nestled among the lush greenery, the Tea House serves tea and coffee alongside a selection of light lunch and refreshment options.
The Tea House is a short walk from the gates of the Botanic Gardens, passing through a 21st Century garden and an amazing heritage rose garden along the way. The café itself is small and most of the seating is alfresco. The large trees looming above and outdoor umbrellas provide ample shade for the sun-shy, and there are plenty of sunny spots if you want to bask in the sun.
The menu is small but with sufficient variety to suit most tastes, and the coffee is good. Service is excellent and leisurely as the drinks and food are made fresh upon order. Enjoy the scenery or settle down with a good book while you wait. Gaze at butterflies flitting through the air, and laugh at enterprising crows trying to steal their next meal. There is no loud café music or bawdy conversations at the next table, like you would expect to experience in a city café. Here, the word of the day is zen, and zen you will experience.
For those with green fingers, there is a small selection of potted plants for sale in front of the café, courtesy of the Garden's Growing Friends Nursery. Plants cost $6 and up. In addition, the nursery is open for plant sales every Wednesday from 9am to 12noon.
The Geelong Botanic Gardens are situated in the Eastern Gardens, just up the hill from the Eastern Beach swimming area. You can get to the Gardens on foot or by car, and ample parking space is available near the entrance along the Eastern Park Circuit. A map of the gardens is available
here.
