You might expect a violin enthusiast or a Beethoven fanboy at an Adelaide Symphony Orchestra show, but it's not usually considered the domain of your typical geek. But it seems that these classical musicians have a bit of a geeky streak, and three upcoming shows are set to appeal to those who love fantasy, gaming, and sci fi.

1. The Lord Of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Have you sat through the 11-hour Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Trilogy so many times that you're looking for a new way to enjoy Peter Jackson's epic films? Well you can at least enjoy The Fellowship of the Ring thanks to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

You'll be able to sit back and enjoy the film, but this is a chance for the music to do the talking. The score is award winning, as was the film, and this is a unique way to enjoy it.

2. Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy first came out in 1987, and in the last 25 years it has spawned 14 base games as well as various spin offs. It's not all about the gameplay, Final Fantasy is also well known for fantastic cinematography and a magical score.

Nobuo Uematsu composed the score for every Final Fantasy instalment, and has numerous other video game scores under his belt. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy, no doubt you've appreciated the effect these fantastic scores have on the gameplay. Arnie Roth is the conductor, and Uematsu will also be in attendance, playing keyboards in one of the numbers.

During the performance scenes from the video game series will be projected onto one of the large screens at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, so you can enjoy the full effect.

3. 2001: A Space Odyssey

The final show is actually part of the 2013 Adelaide Festival, and you'll have to wait a few months for this one. This time paying homage to Stanley Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film to appeal to film buffs and sci-fi fans.

If you're not familiar with the film, don't let the name fool you, it was filmed in 1968 and is one of Kubrik's best known films. Despite commissioning a score for the film, it was abandoned at the last minute and a collection of classical pieces were used instead.

This Adelaide Symphony Orchestra performance includes the screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey while the orchestra perform these impressive classical pieces. They'll be joined by the voices of the Adelaide Chamber Singers.

If you're a Fringe Benefits member you can get tickets for just $30.

When: Friday & Saturday 8-9th March
Where: Adelaide Festival Centre
Duration: 3 hours
Tickets: $30-$139

So do any of these performances tickle your favourite geeky indulgence? You'll have to get in quick to see Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy, and it's possible that the 2001: A Space Odyssey cult classic will sell our during the festival.
